Technology Overview

Understanding
Epoxy Powder

Epoxy powder coatings are the preferred chemistry wherever maximum chemical and corrosion resistance is the primary requirement. The dense, cross-linked epoxy film forms an exceptional barrier against solvents, acids, alkalis, and moisture, making it the standard for tooling, automotive underhood and industrial equipment.

IFS epoxy powders are formulated for interior and enclosed applications. They should not be used where sustained UV exposure is expected. Use a polyester or hybrid chemistry for exterior performance. IFS epoxy can be custom formulated to dial in hardness, flexibility, cure schedule, and gloss for your specific production line.

01

Maximum Chemical Resistance

Epoxy chemistry delivers unmatched chemical resistance to solvents, acids, alkalis, and industrial chemicals, outperforming polyester and hybrid chemistries in aggressive environments.

02

Superior Corrosion Protection

Excellent adhesion combined with a dense, impermeable film creates a barrier that protects steel and metal substrates from corrosion, humidity, and salt exposure.

03

Cure & Gloss Flexibility

Broad cure schedule options, including low-temperature cure, plus a full gloss range from matte through high gloss make epoxy adaptable across a wide range of production lines and substrates.

Epoxy vs Hybrid

Pure epoxy maximises chemical resistance. Hybrid adds limited exterior capability, so choose based on your environment.

Formulation A

Pure Epoxy

Maximum chemical and corrosion resistance · Interior

Advantages

  • Excellent adhesion to metal substrates
  • Excellent chemical and solvent resistance
  • Excellent corrosion resistance
  • Excellent flexibility and hardness
  • Wide range of cure schedules available
  • Low-temperature cure options
  • Full gloss range: matte to high gloss
  • Custom formulation available

Limitations

  • Chalking and discoloration with exterior UV exposure, interior use only
  • Discoloration with sustained heat exposure
  • Flexibility and impact resistance reduce as chemical resistance and hardness increase

Formulation B

Epoxy / Polyester Hybrid

Balanced resistance with improved weatherability

Hybrid

Advantages

  • Better exterior resistance than pure epoxy
  • Improved overbake and yellowing resistance vs epoxy
  • Good chemical resistance with improved weatherability
  • Often used as a primer under topcoat systems

Limitations

  • Chemical resistance below pure epoxy
  • Not suitable for aggressive solvent or acid environments
  • Limited gloss range compared to pure epoxy
