Creating a Seamless Landmark

Custom Color Matching Delivers Design Continuity

June 18, 2026

When designers set out to create a new civic landmark, every detail matters—including the visual transition between materials. For this striking pavilion project, the Berkeley Riverfront streetcar, Structura partnered with Burns & McDonnell and Zahner to bring a custom multi-height pole system to life, creating a dynamic architectural feature that extends up to 45 feet above the canopy.

Designed collaboratively by the Burns & McDonnell and Structura teams, the pole system was engineered with exceptionally slender profiles that align with the pavilion's support columns, creating a refined and elegant aesthetic. The upper 16 feet of each pole incorporates recessed, dot-free RGBW lighting strips that remain virtually invisible during the day while transforming the structure into a dramatic illuminated element at night.

Achieving a seamless appearance across multiple materials was a critical design objective. To support this vision, IFS Coatings developed a custom stainless steel color match in a high-performance powder coating specifically engineered for exterior environments. The result was an exceptionally accurate finish that allowed coated metal components to blend seamlessly with adjacent stainless steel elements.

Multiple mockups were evaluated throughout the design process to refine both the lighting placement and overall appearance. The final installation delivers a cohesive visual experience, with the transition between stainless steel and powder-coated surfaces virtually disappearing from view.

The success of the custom color match delighted both Structura and the design team, helping preserve the project's clean architectural lines while ensuring the durability required for long-term outdoor performance. The finished landmark not only meets demanding aesthetic expectations but also satisfies BABA standards, demonstrating how thoughtful collaboration between architects, fabricators, and coating specialists can bring ambitious design concepts to life.
